Antennal hairs as long as segment width, or longer than segment width; strong; dense; salient. Palps darkened; short, or normal; palpomeres 3. First palpomere of normal shape, or thickened; with 2–3 bristles; with only some sparse sensillae. Second palpomere shortly oval. Third palpomere as long as first segment. Thorax. Colour bright brown. Notum unicolour. Thoracic setae normal; dark, or darkened. Mesonotum with some weaker central bristles. Posterior pronotum bare. Mesothoracic sclerites bare. Legs. Colour yellow-brown. Hind coxae of same colour as femora. Hairs on fore coxae black. Front tibia apically with a patch of setae. Front tibial organ dark. Front tibial organ not bordered. Tibial setae on hind legs weak, inconspicuous. Tibial spurs of equal length. Claws untoothed. Wings. Wings slightly darkened; reduced, with weakly developed anal lobe. Wing membrane without macrotrichia. Wing venation weak, with faint m-base. M-fork of normal shape. R1 inserting clearly before base of m-fork; posterior veins bare; bM bare; r-m bare; bM:r-M 1.36–1.55; st-Cu:bM 0.22–0.4; r1:r 0.77–0.93; C:w 0.65–0.75. Halteres dark; of normal length, or long. Abdomen. Abdominal setae strong and dense; dorsally dark; ventrally dark. Hypopygium concolour with abdomen; 0.6–0.75 × longer than wide. Base of gonocoxites with normal, weak hairs, or with strong setae; gonocoxites narrowly separated, or forming an inverse V, or fused; inner margin of gonocoxites normally U-shaped; inner membrane of hypopygium bare; elongated setae on valves of hypopygium absent. Gonostylus elongate; 2.15–2.4 × longer than wide; Inner margin straight; apex tapered, or equally rounded. Apical tooth present; 1.3–1.9 × longer than broad; strong. Awl-like setae normal; on inner side of gonostyles apically present. Megasetae on inner part of gonostylus absent. Whiplash-hair absent. Tegmen 0.58–0.68 × longer than broad; equally rounded; normal; Central process absent. Length of aedeagus/hypopygium 15–27 %; Aeadeagal apical structure present. Measurements. Body size 2–2.4 mm. Hind tibia 0.6–0.9 mm. Wing length 1.7–1.95 mm.

Diagnosis

Trichosiopsis nativa is the smallest currently known Trichosiopsis species, which lacks macrotrichia on the posterior wing veins. Trichosiopsis albescens, another small species without machrotrichia can be distinguished by the lack of awl-like setae below the apical tooth. The shape of the gonostylus in Tr. nativa resembles Trichosiopsis brevior, which instead has much longer antennae.

Discussion

Despite of the small size, the antennal hairs of Tr. nativa are very strong, just as in two other Taiwanese species, Trichosiopsis perturbata and Trichosiopsis ironica, which might be an indication for a separate group of species.

Etymology

lat. nativus = native

Distribution

Taiwan[1].
