Description (male)

Head. Eye bridge 4 rows of facets. Antenna unicolour. LW-index of 4th flagellomere 2.08–2.3; neck 0.31–0.41 × segment width; transition of basal part to neck pronounced. Colour of neck unicolour. Antennal setae shorter than segment width; of normal strength; adjacent. Palpus darkened; of normal length; palpomeres 3. First palpomere of normal shape; with 2–4 setae; with only sparse sensilla. Second palpomere short and oval. Third palpomere as long as first. Thorax. Colour brown. Notum unicolour. Thoracic setae long and strong; black. Posterior pronotum setose. Postpronotal setae 1–3; strong. Mesothoracic sclerites bare. Legs. Colour brown. Hind coxa of same colour as femora. Setae on front coxa black. Front tibial organ as patch of setae; dark; front tibial organ not bordered. Tibial setae on hind legs weak and inconspicuous. Tibial spurs of equal length. Claws untoothed. Wing. Wing slightly darkened; with weakly developed anal lobe. Wing membrane without macrotrichia. Wing venation weak, with faint stM. M-fork of normal shape. R1 ending at or slightly before base of m-fork; posterior veins with macrotrichia; stM bare; CuA1 and CuA2 with a few macrotrichia; bM bare; r-m bare, or with few setae; bM:r-M 0.7–0.9; st-Cu:bM 0.45–0.7; R1:R 1.1–1.35; c:w 0.65–0.75. Halter darkened; of normal length. Abdomen. Abdominal setae dense; on tergites black; on sternites black. Hypopygium concolour with abdomen; LW-index 0.55–0.7. Base of gonocoxites with weak setae; gonocoxites forming an inverse V; inner margin of gonocoxites typically U-shaped; inner membrane of hypopygium scarcely setose, or densely setose; ventral margin of gonocoxite with short setae. Gonostylus elongate; LW-index 2.2–2.4; Inner margin concave; apex equally rounded, or with one obtuse angle. Apical tooth present; without internal structure; of medium strength; LW-Index 2–3.5. Awl-like setae long, or normal; beneath apical tooth absent. Megasetae absent. Whiplash-hair absent. Tegmen 0.76–0.96 × longer than broad; rectangular with rounded edges; without special features; central process absent. Length of ejaculatory apodeme/hypopygium 32–40 %; base of ejaculatory apodeme absent. Field with aedeagal teeth clearly visible. Measurements. Body size 2.8–3.6 mm. Wing length 2.5–3 mm.

Diagnosis

Trichosiopsis lemmi is a dark-coloured species, which is very conspicuous by the reduction of setae on the posterior wing veins and the also reduced anal angle. Such partial reduction is otherwise present in Trichosiopsis viaticella, but Tr. lemmi has a more elongate gonostylus. The long awl-like setae and the cleared part at the base of the gonocoxites (inverse V) remind of Leptospina, which instead has completely bare posterior wing veins.

DNA Barcoding

The COI sequence is assigned to BIN BOLD:ADD8726 (n=1, K2P: 11.45%).

Etymology

The species is named after the Swiss-German artist Christiane (“Lemmi”) Kuhn, née Lempelius.

Discussion

Trichosiopsis lemmi belongs by COI similarity to a group of species, which also includes Trichosiopsis supralata, Trichosiopsis wiebke, Trichosiopsis illustris and Trichosiopsis vilkamaai. However, the other species in that group have a much broader gonostylus and still more elongate awl-like setae. Although this species group cannot be united by morphological means, it shares a mostly Nordic distribution.
