Head. Eye bridge 4–5 rows of facets. Antenna unicolour. LW-index of 4th flagellomere 2.3–2.8; neck 0.3–0.45 × segment width; transition of basal part to neck pronounced. Colour of neck unicolour. Antennal setae shorter than segment width; of normal strength. Sensillae present. Antennal setae salient. Palpus darkened; of normal length; palpomeres 3. First palpomere of normal shape; with 3–5 setae; with only sparse sensilla. Second palpomere short and oval. Third palpomere as long as first. Thorax. Colour dark brown, or brown. Notum unicolour. Thoracic setae long and strong, or normal; black. Posterior pronotum setose. Postpronotal setae 2–3. Mesothoracic sclerites bare. Legs. Colour yellow-brown. Hind coxa darkened. Setae on front coxa black. Front tibial organ as patch of setae; dark; front tibial organ not bordered. Tibial setae on hind legs weak and inconspicuous. Tibial spurs of equal length. Claws untoothed. Wing. Wing slightly darkened; with weakly developed anal lobe. Wing membrane without macrotrichia. Wing venation weak, with faint stM. M-fork of normal shape. R1 ending at or slightly before base of m-fork; posterior veins with macrotrichia; stM with a few macrotrichia; CuA1 and CuA2 mostly with macrotrichia; bM bare; r-m with few setae, or mostly setose; bM:r-M 0.5–0.7; st-Cu:bM 0.15–0.35; R1:R 1.3–1.7; c:w 0.75–0.85. Halter darkened; of normal length. Abdomen. Abdominal setae strong; dense; on tergites black; on sternites black. Hypopygium concolour with abdomen; LW-index 0.65–0.78. Base of gonocoxites with weak setae; gonocoxites broadly separated; inner margin of gonocoxites typically U-shaped; inner membrane of hypopygium scarcely setose; ventral margin of gonocoxite with short setae. Gonostylus elongate; LW-index 1.9–2.2; Inner margin concave; apex equally rounded. Apical tooth present; without internal structure; strong; LW-Index 2.4–2.9. Awl-like setae long; beneath apical tooth absent. Megasetae absent. Whiplash-hair absent. Tegmen 0.45–0.66 × longer than broad; rectangular with rounded edges; without special features; central process absent. Length of ejaculatory apodeme/hypopygium 15–28 %; base of ejaculatory apodeme absent. Field with aedeagal teeth inconspicuous. Measurements. Body size 3–4 mm. Hind tibia 1.75–1.95 mm. Wing length 2.7–4 mm.

Diagnosis

Trichosiopsis illustris is similar to Trichosiopsis subviatica by the apically rounded gonostylus and is placed in the viatica group. It can be clearly distinguished from the latter by its longer dorso-apical setae at the gonostylus. The gonostylus is mesially more concave and has a longer apical tooth than Tr. subviatica. The overall setosity of Tr. illustris is weaker than in Tr. subviatica and it does not have a thickened first palp segment. Tr. illustris resembles also Trichosiopsis rotunda, which was described from Turkmenistan and which can be distinguished by much longer apical setae at the gonostylus. For the distinction of the sister species Trichosiopsis vilkamaai see under the latter.

DNA Barcoding

The COI sequence is assigned to BIN BOLD:ADA7223 (average distance 1.77%, max. 1.77%, n=2, K2P: 3.7%).

Etymology

lat. illustris = famous

Discussion

As revealed by DNA-barcoding, Trichosiopsis illustris belongs to a species complex of closely related species. There are at least two different genetic variants present in Northern Europe. So it must be concluded that very fine species concepts are needed, and that observed subtle morphological differences cannot be attributed to intraspecific variation. It is therefore considered, that Tr. illustris and Tr. vilkamaai are different species. Another specimen from Kundur Khabarovsk, Russian Far East, paratype of Trichosiopsis brevipalpa belongs to a further, still undescribed species in this complex. On the other hand, the morphologically similar species complex around Tr. subviatica is genetically not much related to this species complex.

Distribution

Finland, Norway, Sweden.
