procuticle (noun; Latin pro, before; cutis, skin): (Arthropoda) The thicker layer beneath the epicuticle consisting of endocuticle and exocuticle that lends mass and strength to the cuticle; it contains chitin, sclerotin and also calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate deposits in Crustacea.
