lac (noun; Skr. laksa): (Arthropoda: Insecta) A yellowish or reddishbrown resinous substance secreted by a homopterous scale insect in the family Kerridae (=Tachardiidae, Lacciferidae), important commercially as lac or shellac for varnishes, as sealing wax, and as insulating material in electrical work, cultivated in India, Ceylon and Burma; also has a medicinal use in Mexico.
