gena (noun; plural genae; Latin gena, cheek): (Arthropoda: Insecta) 1. That part of an insect head on each side below the eyes, bordered by the frontal suture, and behind the eyes, by the occipital suture. 2. In Diptera, the region lying between the face and the lower margin of the eye on either side; parafacials or genal groove. 3. In Hymenoptera, the lateral portions of the head between the eyes and the insertions of the mandibles of Formicidae.
