epaulet also epaulett (noun; plural epaulets, epaulettes; French diminutive epaule, shoulder): 1. (Arthropoda: Insecta) a. In Diptera, sclerites at the base of the costa. b. In Hymenoptera, the tegula. c. In Lepidoptera, the sclerotized separation of the tympanum from the membranous dorsoposterior portion of the epimeron, variable in shape between species; the nodular sclerite.

2. (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa) Branched or knobbed processes of the oral arms.

3. (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) Crescentic ridges of cilia of the sea urchin nymph.

4. (NEMATA) A specialized shield-shaped band of cephalic cuticle, not to be confused with cordons.
