boss (noun; plural bosses; French bosse, hump): 1. Any protruberant part, prominence or swelling.

2. (Arthropoda: Chelicerata) In Arachnida, a smooth lateral prominence at the base of a chelicera of spiders.

3. (Arthropoda: Crustacea) An umbo.

4. (Arthropoda: Insecta) In Diptera, a sclerotized, elevated area at the base of the ventral brush in certain Culicidae larvae.

5. (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) The base of a spine on a sea urchin test.

6. (Mollusca: Gastropoda) A rounded elevation of a shell, larger than a tubercle.
