apical area: 1. (Arthropoda: Insecta) see petiole.

2. (Mollusca: Polyplacophora) The short part of the periostracum and tegmentum on the head and intermediate valves that is adjacent to the posterior dorsal edge of a valve and which extends over the edge and onto the ventral side.
