Diagnosis
Hirtipennia tomentosa is a quite large, bright haired species of the genus Hirtipennia. It is characterized by the nearly complete coverage of the wings with macrotrichia. This character is shared by Hirtipennia hirtipennis and Hirtipennia holotricha, which instead have dark hairs on abdomen and thorax and broader gonostyli. The most similar species appears to be Hirtipennia parcepilosa, which also has bright hairs and slender gonostyli but no macrotrichia below cu1 and only a few under the m-fork and shorter antennae.
Etymology
lat. tomentum = cushion; making reference hairy wing membrane.
Ecology
Hirtipennia tomentosa is probably a Mediterranean species.
Distribution
Croatia[1], France[3], Greece[1], Israel[2], Italy[1], Morocco[4], Turkey.
