pharate (adjective; Greek pharos, garment): (Arthropoda: Insecta) 1. A stage in metamorphosis that does not usually represent a distinct morphological stage. 2. Any stage of development that remains within the cuticle of the preceding stage. 3. Pertaining to the last larval instar forming the puparium and from which an adult emerges.
