eyespots (noun, plural; Anglo-Saxon eage, eye; Middle English spotte, spotted): Pigmented areas in many invertebrates to which are attributed various functions: a simple eye or visual organ (ocellus); intimidation of predators; to deflect attention to the least vulnerable parts of the body; a sensory organ.
