coral reef: A calacareous mass formed by colonies of coral organisms; types include: 1. Fringing reef, extending out to a quarter of a mile from shore. 2. Barrier reef, separated by a lagoon from a shore. 3. Atoll, a circular reef encircling a lagoon of water.
