Materials Examined

Description

Description. Size. Large for genus (SBL range 1.89–2.01 mm, mean 1.96± 0.050 mm, n=4). Habitus. Body form slightly convex, slightly ovoid, moderately elongate (WE/SBL 0.35±0.005), head of moderate width for genus compared to pronotum (WH/WPm 0.72±0.014), pronotum of moderate width in comparison to elytra (WPm/WE 0.75±0.018). Color. Body color rufotestaceous, appendages testaceous. Prothorax. Pronotum slightly long (LP/LE 0.40±0.012) and moderately elongate (WPm/LP 1.25±0.029), with lateral margins rectilinear constricted posteriorly (WPm/WPp 1.56±0.068). Width between anterior angles moderately greater than between posterior angles (WPa/WPp 1.21±0.034). Elytra. Slightly depressed along suture, comparatively long (LE/SBL 0.52±0.013) and slightly wide (WE/LE 0.67±0.010). Lateral margins slightly divergent at basal third, subparallel at middle and evenly rounded to apex in apical third. Male genitalia. Median lobe (Fig. 13 A) with straight ventral margin and bent downward enlarged apex with tapered rounded tip. Sclerites of internal sac uneven with long, heavily sclerotized ventral and short, weakly sclerotized dorsal branches, united together basally, shorter than half the distance between apical and basal orifices. Left paramere with long apical constriction (Fig. 13 C). Ring sclerite with transverse handle of moderate length (Fig. 14 J). Female internal genitalia. Goncoxite 2 with long ensiform setae (Fig. 15 G). Spermatheca sclerotized, strikingly elongate, curved, with two indistinctly split compartments (Fig. 17 A). Spermathecal duct extremely long with numerous coils. Attachments of spermathecal duct and gland to spermatheca moderately distant from each other. Geographical distribution. This species is known from one locality located in North Otago (Fig. 18 B, yellow triangle). Way of life. Specimens were collected in the tussockland close to a hilltop. Relationships. In the hypertrophy of features of male median lobe and spermatheca, members of this species resembles those of Z. lescheni. However, the ranges of these two species are widely isolated geographically, which suggests only a distant relationships if any. Relationships of Z. carltoni are not postulated here.
