Description

Description. Size. Medium to large for genus (SBL range 1.73–1.95 mm, mean 1.81± 0.054 mm, n=20). Habitus. Body form slightly convex, ovoid, moderately elongate (WE/SBL 0.36±0.011), head of moderate width for genus compared to pronotum (WH/WPm 0.72±0.015), pronotum rather narrow in comparison to elytra (WPm/WE 0.72±0.018).

Color. Body color rufotestaceous, appendages testaceous. Prothorax. Pronotum slightly long (LP/LE 0.41±0.008) and moderately elongate (WPm/LP 1.25±0.026), with lateral margins rectilinear constricted posteriorly (WPm/WPp 1.56±0.068). Width between anterior angles moderately greater than between posterior angles (WPa/WPp 1.16±0.058). Elytra. Slightly depressed along suture, comparatively long (LE/SBL 0.52±0.013) and moderately wide (WE/ LE 0.70±0.025). Lateral margins slightly divergent at basal third, subparallel at middle and evenly rounded to apex in apical third.

Male genitalia. Median lobe (Fig. 13 Q) with convex ventral margin and rather long apex with tapered narrowly rounded tip. Sclerites of internal sac slightly sclerotized, separate, long, almost equal half of the length between apical and basal orifices. Left paramere with apical constriction (Fig. 13 S). Ring sclerite without visible handle (Fig. 14 H). Female internal genitalia. Goncoxite 2 with short ensiform setae (Fig. 15 F). Spermatheca sclerotized, slightly elongate, comparatively wide, with two compartments (Fig. 16 F). Spermathecal duct short and without coils. Attachments of spermathecal duct and gland to spermatheca close together. Geographical distribution. This species is known from two distant coastal forest localities of North and South Otago: majority of specimens were collected in Oamaru (Glen Warren Reserve), and only one specimen is known from the Coastal Otago Hills (Alison Reserve). The last locality needs confirmation (Fig. 18 B, white triangles). Way of life. Specimens were collected in the coastal dry broadleaf forest and in the Podocarp/broadleaf forest. Relationships. In the structure of male median lobe, members of this species are distinct from the other members of subgenus. The shape of round sclerite is similar to the allopatric interior species Z. lescheni and Z. montivagus. Also, females of Z. brouni resemble those of Z. montivagus in the shape of spermatheca (i.e., in having two compartments with the larger part short and wide). These morphological similarities suggest that Z. brouni shares a common ancestry with Z. montivagus and Z. lescheni.
