Antennal hairs shorter than segment width; dense; adjacent. Palps bright; normal; palpomeres 3. First palpomere of normal shape; with 2–3 bristles; with only some sparse sensillae. Second palpomere shortly oval. Third palpomere as long as first segment. Thorax. Colour reddish. Notum unicolorous. Thoracic setae normal; darkened, or bright. Mesonotum with some weaker central bristles. Posterior pronotum setose. Postpronotal setae 2–6; fine. Laterotergite bare. Legs. Colour yellow. Hind coxae of same colour as femora. Hairs on fore coxae bright. Front tibia apically with a patch of setae. Front tibial organ bright. Front tibial organ not bordered. Tibial setae on hind legs weak, inconspicuous. Tibial spurs of equal length. Claws untoothed. Wings. Wings slightly darkened; of normal shape. Wing membrane without macrotrichia. Wing venation weak, with faint m-base. M-fork of normal shape. R1 inserting clearly before base of m-fork; posterior veins bare; bM bare; r-m with a few setae; bM:r-M 0.75–0.95; st-Cu:bM 0.3–0.45; r1:r 1.05–1.35; C:w 0.6–0.75. Halteres dark; of normal length. Abdomen. Abdominal setae weak; dorsally white; ventrally white. Hypopygium bicolour; 0.48–0.65 × longer than wide. Base of gonocoxites with normal, weak hairs; gonocoxites broadly separated; inner margin of gonocoxites normally U-shaped; inner part of hypopygium densely setose; elongated setae on valves of hypopygium absent. Gonostylus globular; 1.6–2 × longer than wide; Inner margin with complex structure; apex equally rounded. Apical tooth present; 2–2.5 × longer than broad; weak. Awl-like setae normal; below apex absent. Megasetae on inner part of gonostylus absent. Whiplash-hair absent. Diagnosis
Trichosiopsis tuberculigera is a small species and differs from most other Trichosiopsis by the lacking macrotrichia on the posterior wing veins and the unusually shaped gonostylus.
DNA Barcoding
The COI sequence is assigned to BIN BOLD:ACU4750 (average distance 0.1%, max. 0.15%, n=3, K2P: 7.22%).
Discussion
Trichosiopsis tuberculigera was the only species of the montypic genus Trichosiopsis. It was later allocated in a separate subgenus by Mohrig & Menzel (1997)[2] for the lacking apical tooth on the gonostylus. However Vilkamaa & Salmela (2005)[3] observed, that there is indeed a very tiny tooth present on the inner middle lobe. This indicates, that the inner lobe is homologous to the apex of normal Trichosiopsis and the upper lobe is only a luxury structure formed by the dorsal part of the gonostylus, just as in some species of Leptospina or in some species of Sciara. Therefore the concept of Trichosiopsis is now broadened to include as well all other species of the former subgenus Leptosciarella s. str. sensu Mohrig & Menzel (1997).
Etymology
tuber lat. = hump; gerere lat. = bear. The species name refers to the tubercle-like structures on the inner side of the gonostylus.
Ecology
Until now Trichosiopsis tuberculigera has been found only in Scandinavia northern to 60°N, so it seems to be a boreal species, with a restricted distribution, but locally not rare.
Distribution
Finland[1][3], Norway[4], Sweden[5].
