Other material studied

Austria: 1 ♀, Styria, same data as holotype, PKHH 8223.

Diagnosis

The species is based on its unique COI sequence. Morphologically the species resembles Trichosiopsis hispida by the dark-coloured legs, the narrow wings and the presence of setae on the laterotergite.

DNA Barcoding

The COI sequence is assigned to BIN BOLD:ACM3281 (average distance 0.15%, max. 0.15%, n=2, K2P: 11.77%)

Etymology

lat. incognitus = unknown. The name refers to the fact, that males of this species are still unknown.

Discussion

Trichosiopsis incognita is described as a good species, even though only females are known. Its K2P is very high, and in fact the highest among the whole Trichosiopsis trochanterata complex. Despite of having a setose laterotergite, the nearest genetical neighbour is Trichosiopsis zanti, a member of the non-setose subgroup. This species is placed genetically just between the two subgroups. But apparently the presence of setae on the laterotergite has some phylogenetic relevance in this natural group of species.

Distribution

Austria.
