Description (male)
Head. Eye bridge 4–5 rows of facets. Antenna unicolour. LW-index of 4th flagellomere 2.25–2.56; neck 0.3–0.4 × segment width; transition of basal part to neck pronounced. Colour of neck unicolour. Antennal setae shorter than segment width; of normal strength; sparse, or dense; salient. Palpus darkened; short; palpomeres 3. First palpomere thickened; with 2–3 setae; with only sparse sensilla. Second palpomere globular. Third palpomere shorter than first. Thorax. Colour brown, or reddish. Notum unicolour. Thoracic setae normal; black, or brown. Posterior pronotum bare. Mesothoracic sclerites bare. Legs. Colour yellow. Hind coxa of same colour as femora. Setae on front coxa darkened. Front tibial organ as patch of setae; pale; front tibial organ not bordered. Tibial setae on hind legs weak and inconspicuous, or normal, shorter than tibial width. Tibial spurs of equal length. Claws untoothed. Wing. Wing slightly darkened; of normal shape. Wing membrane without macrotrichia. Wing venation weak, with faint stM. M-fork of normal shape. R1 ending at or slightly before base of m-fork; posterior veins with macrotrichia; stM bare; CuA1 and CuA2 mostly with macrotrichia; bM bare; r-m bare, or with few setae; bM:r-M 1.1–1.42; st-Cu:bM 0.25–0.45; R1:R 0.85–1.05; c:w 0.68–0.78. Halter darkened; of normal length. Abdomen. Abdominal setae strong; dense; on tergites brown; on sternites brown. Hypopygium concolour with abdomen; LW-index 0.45–0.7. Base of gonocoxites bare, or with weak setae; gonocoxites fused; inner margin of gonocoxites typically U-shaped; inner membrane of hypopygium densely setose; ventral margin of gonocoxite with short setae. Gonostylus elongate; LW-index 1.75–2; Inner margin straight, or concave; apex equally rounded. Apical tooth present; without internal structure; of medium strength, or weak; LW-Index 2–3.5. Awl-like setae long; beneath apical tooth numerous and reaching far beyond the tooth. Megasetae absent. Whiplash-hair present; whiplash-hairs 1; position of lowest whiplash-hair 15–22 % from top. Tegmen 0.6–0.72 × longer than broad; equally rounded, or laterally emarginate; without special features; central process absent. Length of ejaculatory apodeme/hypopygium 12–20 %; base of ejaculatory apodeme present. Field with aedeagal teeth inconspicuous. Measurements. Body size 2.8–3–6 mm. Hind tibia 0.96–1.16 mm. Wing length 2.6–3.1 mm.
Diagnosis
Trichosiopsis helvetica helvetica differs from the smaller Trichosiopsis helvetica sami by a thicker gonostylus with a tinier apical tooth on the dorsal side, which is nearly completely hidden in ventral view. The barcoded specimen from Bavaria is in accordance with the figures in the original description. Both subspecies are as well clearly separated by their DNA barcodes.
