Discussion
Sciara echinata was listed as a synonym under Leptosciarella rejecta (=Trichosiopsis rejecta) by Mohrig and Menzel (1997)[2]. Although the assignment to the genus Trichosiopsis is quite certain, the species is not, because Tr. rejecta sensu Mohrig & Menzel (1997) resulted to be a complex of more than ten species Mohrig & Menzel mentioned, that the gonostylus was extremely deformed, so that Fig 5 of the original description is not reliable. The text of the description however, is fitting quite well with Trichosiopsis cavernarum with respect to the darkened legs and also the wing length of 3.5 mm. Particularly the mention of the short spines at the hind tibiae affirms this assumption. Unfortunately, a loan of the holotype was not possible, because it could not be allocated at the National History Museum in Vienna (NHMW), as asserted by P. Sehnal, Curator of Diptera (pers. comm.). For the time being, it is proposed to treat the name Sciara echinata as a nomen dubium.
Etymology
Echinus lat. = sea urchin, making reference to the spiny apex of the gonostyles.
