Diagnosis

The species is based on its unique COI sequence, The female holotype matches in all comparable characters with Trichosiopsis neomelanoma its currently nearest neighbour.

DNA Barcoding

The COI sequence is assigned to BIN BOLD:ACL1495 (average distance 0.21%, n=3, max. 0.31%, K2P: 9.00%).

Discussion

Trichosiopsis cryptomelanoma is only known from three females and does not show noticeable differences to its sister species Tr. neomelanoma. However, the male genitalia cannot be compared presently, because males are unknown. The large K2P: of 9% does not justify to simply treat it as a subspecies or even identical to the latter. On the other hand the distance is not too far to deduce a close relationship of both species, concluding that Tr. cryptomelanoma also belongs to the melanoma species complex.

Etymology

The species is named upon the similarity with Tr. neomelanoma and its cryptic status.

Distribution

Canada (Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec)
