NZIB checklist [p. 398]

ATELURIDAE [P. M. Johns]

  • Atopatelura sp.
  • Gen. nov. et n. spp. (3) Wise 1970 3E [genus name underlined]

NOTES

  • the identification of Atopatelura is unsafe
  • Atopatelura was first reported from New Zealand by Salmon (1970: 31)/Wise (1970: 64), based on a single species which remains undescribed to this day, but the taxonomic concept of the genus has subsequently changed, with all Australian species transferred to a new genus, Australiatelura, by Mendes (1995), so the New Zealand material needs to be reexamined in the light of this
  • Wise (1970) only reported 1 species of Atopatelura from New Zealand, and no other atelurids (atelurine nicoletiids), so it is unclear why NZIB lists 'Gen. nov. et n. spp. (3) Wise 1970 3E [genus name underlined]'
  • Salmon (1970: 31) also indicated a single species, viz. 'the family Nicoletiidae containing an undescribed myrmecophilic species of Atopatelura'
  • the NZIB claim of an undescribed endemic genus therefore stands in need of confirmation, as does the identification of Atopatelura, so, at present, the only thing that can safely be said is that atelurids are present in New Zealand, but are greatly in need of study
  • I have observed atelurids fairly commonly associated with ants nests in the Auckland region
  • Ateluridae is very often treated as subfamily Atelurinae of family Nicoletiidae, but I need to investigate this matter further before making a final decision on which way to jump
