Etymology

The species was named after the collector of the type specimen, the Latvian Entomologist Paul Lackschewitz (1865-1936).

Ecology

This apparently rare species was mainly found in European bogs and mires between the 53°N and 68°N.

Relationships

Sciara lackschewitzi is similar to Sciara mendax, but can be distinguished by the lack of macrotrichia on the wing membrane. Tuomikoski (1960: 15)[2] recognized the similarity with Sciara helvola, from which it can be distinguished by the completely dark colour and the less pronounced apical lobe at the gonostyles.

Distribution

Czech Republic?[3], Finland[4], Great Britain[5], Japan[6][7] , Latvia[1].

Remarks

The species concept of Sciara lackschewitzi has been unclear for some time. Menzel (1992: 260-261, figs 1-4)[8] redescribed and figured the lectotype, but erroneously identified it with Sciara mendax. Menzel & Heller (2007: 224-225)[9] separated both species again. Only very few specimens of this species are known, which may be due to the very specific habitat preferences. Nevertheless the distribution has a wide range from Wales in the west to Japan in the east of the Palaearctic Region. The Check List record from 1997 for the Czech and Slovakian Republic[3] was omitted in the current Check List[10] because no specific record is published.
