Phoma sclerotioides
Teleomorph:
- Plenodomus sclerotioides G. Preuss 1849 [without description] ex Sacc. 1892
- Plenodomus meliloti Dearn. & Sanford, Annls mycol. 28(3/4): 324 (1930) is later name, but often accepted as the teleomorph.
Brandenburger 1985: no records exist in Brassicaceae for Phoma sclerotioides or Plenodomus sclerotioides.
Farr et al. 1989: Phoma sclerotioides: accepted Teleomorph is Plenodomus meliloti. Distribution: "North America and Northern Europe. On roots of herbaceous plants, pathogenic on forage legumes." Hosts: "Festuca, Medicago, Poa, Trifolium."
Genbank: many records for Medicago sativa and Lotus corniculatus.

Material studied
BBA/JKI 72198
Isolated from Sinapis arvensis June 2010, received from Dr. Huss, Stadl-Paura, Austria on May 19 2010.
Description on SNA:
Sclerotia are formed early within 3-7 days, in the agar and on agar surface, abundant, single, on and at filterpaper catenate, mostly globose to subglobose, dark olivaceous to black, roughened to verrucose.
Strain BBA/JKI 72198 on SNA, cultivated 7 days at 21°C in complete darkness, followed by 15 days with a day-night regime of 13 h near UV light and 11 h darkness:
Sclerotia: (38,7) 42,8–51,2 (53,7) × (37,5) 40,2–48,7 (51) µm [n = 30; mean (s. d.) = 47 (4,2) × 44,4 (4,23)]
Growth rate(average of 2-3 Petri-dish cultures, measuring and averaging two crossing diameters in each dish) on:
- SNA, 21°C, darkness: measured diameter (5 mm inoculum included) after 7 days: 32,50 mm; calculated daily radial growth: 1,96 mm;
- OA, 21°C, darkness: measured diameter (5 mm inoculum included) after 7 days: 31,83 mm; calculated daily radial growth: 1,92 mm;
- MA, 21°C, darkness: measured diameter (5 mm inoculum included) after 7 days: 15,33 mm; calculated daily radial growth: 0,74 mm;
- CJA, 21°C, darkness: measured diameter (5 mm inoculum included) after 7 days: 31,75 mm; calculated daily radial growth: 1,91 mm;
- PDA, 21°C, darkness: measured diameter (5 mm inoculum included) after 7 days: 25,00 mm; calculated daily radial growth: 1,43 mm;
