Diagnosis

DIAGNOSIS — Characteristic for the new species is the typical prodorsal shield design (Fig. 7 D).

Description

FEMALE (n = 7) — Body spindleform, 146 (134–195), 78 (77–90) wide. Gnathosoma downcurved, (55); basal seta 5 (3–5); antapical seta not seen. Prodorsal shield30 (29–36), 62 (62–77) wide; median one third slightly elevated and forming a broad and short frontal lobe, 4 (3–4). Prodorsal shield tubercles 20 (19–22) apart; scapular seta (sc) missing. Shield design of faint median lines, aproximate on anterior two thirds and farther apart on posterior third; faint admedian and submedian lines on anterior two thirds; a few lines laterally. Legs missing tibial I, genual II and femoral I and II setae. Legs: leg I 38 (38–41); femur 16 (14–16), femoral seta (bv) missing; genu 4 (4–6), genual seta (l") 40 (38–41); tibia 4 (4–6), tibial seta (l') missing; tarsus 12 (12–13), dorsal seta (ft') 35 (31– 36), lateral seta (ft") 35 (35–38), unguinal seta (u') 5 (5–6), solenidion knobbed, 7 (7–9), empodium 9 (8–9), deeply divided, each branch 5 ­rayed. Leg II 33 (33–38); femur 12 (12– 15), bv missing; genu 3 (3–4), l" missing; tibia 4 (4–5); tarsus 11 (11–12), ft'9 (9–11), ft"32 (31–35), u'5 (5), solenidion 7 (7–8), empodium 9 (8–9), divided, 5 ­rayed. Coxigenital area: coxae smooth; coxal seta I (1 b) 11 (11–17), 9 (9–11) apart; coxal seta II (1 a) 29 (25– 29), 9 (8–9) apart; coxal seta III (2 a) 44 (41–48), 25 (25–31) apart. Coxigenital area with 12 (11–14) annuli, microtuberculate. Genitalia42 (41–43) wide, 22 (21–31) long; genital seta (3 a) 11 (11–12). Epigynum with many short basal dashes and 20 (20–28) longitudinal ribs. Opisthosoma with a narrow, short, anterior dorsomedian ridge, extending to approximately dorsal corresponding level of basis of opisthosomal ventral seta I (d). Otherwise evenly rounded, somewhat flattened. Lateral seta (c 2) 40 (36–40), at level of genitalia anterior margin. Ventral seta I (d) 60 (59–64), 39 (39–48) apart, on annulus 10 (10–13) from genitalia rear margin; ventral seta II (e) 52 (48–56), 23 (23–30) apart, on annulus 25 (24–30); ventral seta III (f) 33 (33–37), 26 (26–33) apart, on annulus 41 (40–49) or 8 (8– 10)th from rear. Total ventral annuli 49 (49–58), microtuberculate; total dorsal annuli 64 (63–69), the anterior 10–15 smooth, the remaining microtuberculate. Caudal seta (h 2) 64 (57–67); accessory seta (h 1) minute. MALE (n = 3) – Smaller than female, 141–157, 73 – 75 wide. Gnathosoma: 42; basal seta 3–4; antapical seta not seen; chelicera 47–53. Prodorsal shield28–31, 53 – 61 wide, frontal lobe 2–3. Legs: leg I 33 –35; femur 13–15, bv missing; genu 4–5, l"35–41; tibia 4– 6, l' missing; tarsus 10–11, ft'30–33, ft"31–33, u'4–5, solenidion 7, empodium 7–8, 5 ­ rayed. Leg II 30–31; femur 11, bv missing; genu 3–4, l" missing; tibia 4; tarsus 8–9, ft'7– 9, ft"24–28, u'4, solenidion 7, empodium 7–8, 5 ­rayed. Coxigenital area: 1 b11–13, 8 – 9 apart; 1a 8 – 10, 7 – 8 apart; 2a 28 – 31, 20 – 24 apart. Coxigenital area with 7–10 annuli, microtuberculate. Genitalia26 wide, 18 long, finely granulated; 3a 9 – 11. Opisthosoma: c 2 28–31, at level with genitalia anterior margin; d44–55, 36 – 37 apart, on annulus 9–12; e37–47, 25 – 26 apart, on annulus 22–26; f27–30, 26 – 28 apart, on annulus 40–45 or 9 th from rear. Total ventral annuli 48–53, microtuberculate; total dorsal annuli 54–57, microtubercles as in female. Caudal seta (h 2) 54–59; h 1 minute. RELATION TO HOST PLANT — vagrant on lower leaf surface.

Materials Examined

TYPE MATERIAL — Holotype female, 52 female and 12 male paratypes, from Myrcia guianensis (Aubl.) DC (Myrtaceae), Luis Antônio, São Paulo, Brazil (21 ° 56 ' 20 " S, 47 ° 28 ' 26 " W), 30 Sept. 2002, coll. A. C. Lofego, on seven microscopic preparations.

Etymology

ETYMOLOGY — This species is named after Antonio Carlos Lofego, a graduate student in Acarology who collected and submitted many eriophyid infested plants. REMARKS — See under the following species.
