  • Cunaxa papuliphora Sergeyenko, Alexey L., 2009, Zootaxa 2161: 9-12.

Description

Female (Figs. 27–34 & 57). Gnathosoma (Figs. 27, 28). Chaetotaxy and structure of palps (Fig. 27) and chelicerae as in C. gordeevae sp. nov. Dorsal setae on basifemur filiform, telofemur and genu with slightly incrassate dorsal setae. Apophysis of telofemur cone-like, with pointed apex and attached to the distal margin of segment. Ventral surface of hypognathum papillated; coxal region with internal apodemes (Fig. 28a). There is a smooth area in the region of setae hg 3, separated into two parts by stripes of small papillae. Idiosomal dorsum (Fig. 29 & 57). Chaetotaxy and structure of propodosomal plate as in C. gordeevae sp. nov. Length of setae sci more than half the distance between their bases. Relative length of dorsal hysterosomal setae: f 1 = h 1 ˃ c 1 = d 1 = e 1 ˃ c 2. Hysterosomal striae thin and distinctly lobed (=with festoons) (Fig. 57). Idiosomal venter (Fig. 30). Chaetotaxy of idiosomal venter as in C. gordeevae sp. nov. Propodogastral setae situated on small platelets. Genital valves with small papillae which form longitudinal rows. Legs (Figs. 31–34). Leg chaetotaxy: coxae I–IV, 3sts, 1peg — 1sts — 3sts — 2sts; trochanters I–IV, 1 — 1—2 — 1sts; basifemora I–IV, 3 — 3 — 3 — 1sts; telofemora I–IV, 4 — 4 — 4 — 4sts; genua I–IV, {1asl, 1sts}, 3asl, 4sts — 2asl, 5sts — 1asl, 5sts —asl, 5sts; tibiae: I–IV, {1asl, 1sts}, 1bsl, 4sts —{1bsl, 1sts}, 4sts — 1bsl, 5sts — 1T, 4sts; tarsi I–IV, {1bsl, 1peo, 1sts}, 3bsl, 1dtsl, 2tsl, 23sts — 1bsl, 1dtsl, 1tsl, 25sts — 1tsl, 26sts — 21sts. One of two proximal solenidia on genu I is extremely short, its length as long as the diameter of its alveoli (Fig. 31). Leg surface and structure of segments as in C. gordeevae sp. nov. Measurements. Length of idiosoma 352 (330–390), width 253 (230–270). Length of hypognathum 154 (144–157), width 87 (82–87). Length of palps 175 (170–177). Length of chelicerae 141 (139–146). Length of legs: I 263 (258–286); II 244 (244–258); III 272 (277–291); IV 296 (296–319). Length of setae: hg 1 14 (13–16), hg 2 20 (17–20), hg 3 33 (29–35), hg 4 21 (16–22), ve12 (11–14), sci24 (21–24), c 1 22 (21–23), c 2 18 (19–21), d 1 22 (20–23), e 1 23 (20–24), f 1 36 (35–39), h 1 40 (34–40), g 1–4 11–14 (11–14). Distance between setae: hg 4 –hg 4 32 (30–33), sci–sci34 (30–34), ve–ve103 (96–106), sce–sci38 (36–40).

Discussion

Remarks. In some specimens the proximal solenidia on genu I are in a duplex association.

Description

Male and immatures unknown.

Etymology

Etymology. The specific name papuliphora (from Latin: papuli = heat-spots and Hellenic: phor = bearing) refers to characteristic lobed structure of striae on hysterosomal dorsum. Differential diagnosis. This new species closely resembles С. maculata sp. nov., but differs by the absence of an oval area of broken striae on dorsal propodosomal plate near setae sci.

Biology and Ecology

Biology. Some of the biological peculiarities C. papuliphora sp. nov. were studied in the laboratory on leaves of violet Viola sp. In laboratory this mite species could feeding on tetranychid mites, Tetranychus sp. (Tetranychidae). Cunaxa papuliphora were actively searching for prey. Cannibalism were observed in C. papuliphora.
