Ordo: Asparagales
Familia: Asteliaceae
Name
Astelia Birch, 2015 – Wikispecies link – Pensoft Profile
Note
Flowers with a very short perianth tube (0.1–0.8 mm); anthers dorsifixed, versatile; ovary unilocular; seeds ovoid; funicle long, curved, with mucilaginous funicular hairs poorly developed that surround but do not adhere to the seed.
Remarks
Molecular (Birch et al. 2012[1]) and morphology-based phylogenetic analyses (Birch unpublished PhD thesis 2011) indicate that Astelia subg. Astelia, as circumscribed by Skottsberg (1934)[2], is polyphyletic. Astelia subg. Astelia is revised to include Astelia sect. Palaeastelia and Astelia sect. Astelia, which form a clade. Astelia sect. Desmoneuron is placed in a different clade and it is excluded from Astelia subg. Astelia.
