Materials Examined
Type material. Holotype: Jamaica: ♂, three labels (Fig. 61): "Blue Mountains / Jamaica, lg. Franz" with "SA 120 " on reverse side [white, printed; reverse handwritten in blue ink]; " Alloraphes / jamaicae m. / det. H. Franz" [white, handwritten and printed]; " Typus " [red, handwritten] (NHMW). Paratype: 1 ex., same data as holotype, except for yellow " paratypus " label and "SA 121 " on reverse side of locality label (NHMW).
Revised diagnosis. Male: frons with narrow and sharply demarcated transverse impression between eyes; pronotum with arcuate ante-basal transverse groove, without median pit; elytra modified, with distinctly impressed apical region; aedeagus in ventral view with distinctly asymmetrical apex of median lobe, short apical projections and broad, irregular in shape apices of parameres each bearing three thick and long setae. Diagnostic characters of females unknown.
Description
Redescription. Body of male (Fig. 1) moderately strongly convex, brown, covered with light brown vestiture; BL 0.95 mm. Head (Fig. 22) broadest at large, strongly convex and moderately coarsely faceted eyes, HL 0.13 mm, HW 0.20 mm; tempora in dorsal view rudimentary; vertex distinctly convex; frons flattened and with deep transverse impression between eyes (lateral margins of impression distant from mesal margins of eyes); supraantennal tubercles feebly marked. Punctures on frons and vertex inconspicuous, fine; setae short, sparse and suberect. Antennae slender, AnL 0.43 mm; antennomeres I and II each about twice as long as broad; III slightly longer than broad; VI about 1.2 x as long as broad; V–VII each about as long as broad; VIII slightly transverse; IX–X each distinctly transverse; XI about 1.5 x as long as X and 1.5 x as long as broad. Pronotum (Fig. 23) about as long as broad, broadest in anterior third; PL 0.25 mm, PW 0.24 mm. Anterior margin and lateral margins in anterior half strongly rounded; sides distinctly narrowing caudad, pronotum distinctly constricted near posterior fourth; posterior margin slightly arcuate; ante-basal transverse groove distinct and arcuate, without median pit and with shallow lateral pits. Punctures on pronotal disc inconspicuous, fine and sparse; setae sparse, short and suberect; sides of pronotum with long and disordered bristles. Elytra more convex than pronotum, oval, broadest near anterior third; EL 0.58 mm, EW 0.43 mm, EI 1.35; sub-humeral lines moderately distinct, as long as 1 / 4 EL; elytral apices distinctly impressed except for elytral suture which remains raised. Punctures on elytra distinct but small and shallow, separated by spaces 1–1.5 x as wide as puncture diameters; setae moderately long, sparse and suberect. Hind wings well developed. Legs long and slender; all tibiae straight. Aedeagus (Figs. 27 –28, 44– 45) slender and moderately darkly sclerotized; AeL 0.23 mm; in ventral view apical part of median lobe distinctly asymmetrical and with deeply but narrowly emarginated apical margin; apical projections short and obscured by overlapping apices of parameres; parameres in lateral view with strongly expanded apical parts, in ventral view irregular in shape, each with three thick and long setae. Female. Unknown.
Distribution
Distribution. Greater Antilles: eastern part of Jamaica (Fig. 68 a).
Discussion
Remarks. The type series of A. jamaicae consists of a well-preserved holotype male and remnants of a paratype, with the head, prothorax and the right elytron missing. According to Franz (19980) it is a male. However, the holotype male has a distinctly modified apical region of elytra, while the paratype has the elytron unmodified. It is either a male of a different species or a female. This specimen was not dissected to avoid further damages. Franz (1980 a) gives more precise collecting data: Hardwar-Gap, 1500 m alt., from rotten trunks and stumps, 20.ix. 1968.
