Laetiporus sp. 1

This is being described as a new species of Laetiporus.

Basidiocarps annual, laterally substipitate to sessile, imbricate, sometimes occurring in large imbricate clusters up to 50 cm or more extent; pileus dimidiate to flabelliform, up to 24 cm wide and 32 cm long, upper surface light orange to reddish orange when fresh, fading to pale brownish with age or drying, glabrous, azonate to faintly zonate, radiately furrowed, when fresh; pore surface cream to pale cream, pores nearly circular at first, becoming more angular in age, 2-4 per mm, with thin dissepiments that quickly become lacerate; tube layer pale yellowish white when fresh, drying pale buff, distinct, up to 3 mm thick; context white to yellowish white, azonate, brittle and sappy or succulent when fresh, up to 3cm thick, rapidly becoming crumbly and white in old deteriorating specimens; taste mild, smell like garbage, unpleasant. Hyphal system dimitic; contextual generative hyphae thin-walled, hyaline, simple-septate, with rare branching, 4.6-15 µm in diam.; contextual binding hyphae firm- to thick-walled, hyaline, nonseptate, much branched and interlocking, up to 22 µm in diam.; tramal generative hyphae thin-walled, hyaline simple-septate, 2.4-3.6µm in diam.; tramal skeletal hyphae thick- to firm-walled, 2.4-4.4 µm in diam. Cystidia or other sterile hymenial elements lacking. Basidia clavate, 2-4 sterigmate, (tubular), 15-20 × 5-8 µm, simple-septate at the base. Basidiospores ovoid to ellipsoid, hyaline, smooth, IKI-, CB-, (4.9-) 5.6-7 (-8.3)×(3.1-)3.9-4.7(-5) µm, L = 6.3µm, W = 4.4µm, r = 1.43, R = 1.29-1.63.

Substrata: hardwoods, most frequent on Quercus spp. and Prunus spp. , sometimes on conifers such as Taxus spp. and Pinus sp., occurring on dead logs, stumps, frequently near the base of living large trees, up to only 1-1.5 m above ground level.

Distribution: in the cool temperate to boreal areas in Japan and China.

Laetiporus sp. 1
