Etymology

Derivatio nominis. From the Latin adjective “ tyrrhenicus ”, relating to Tyrrhenus, the name of the mythological saviour of the Etruscans, who led them from Lydia, western Anatolia, to Etruria (Herodotus, Histories, I. 94.5, 7); subsequently the Romans called the sea west of Etruria the Tyrrhenian Sea. This new species chiefly inhabits the northern Tyrrhenian lands.

Discussion

Remarks. Among the species of the Chthonius fuscimanus group, C. tyrrhenicus n. sp. is closely related to C. nanus, an epigean species common and widespread in the same geographical area, and, perhaps, to C. pyrenaicus Beier, 1934, from Spain, the Balearic Islands and France (Pyrénées Orientales). Differences between C. tyrrhenicus and C. nanus are given in the Remarks under the latter species. Callaini (1984) first detected and described morphological differences between some populations from western Liguria—referred to Chthonius sp. (gr. elbanus Beier)—and the true C. nanus (as C. elbanus), but he did not formally propose a new species. Gardini (1990) followed the opinion of Callaini (1984) in a key to the Ligurian Ephippiochthonius. The description and measurements of Gardini (1980 c) and Callaini (1984) agree with the above description of C. tyrrhenicus. Many syntopic occurrences of C. tyrrhenicus and C. nanus have been detected in Liguria (from Genoa and Savona Provinces: see Material examined).
