''Trichosiopsis helvetica sami'' differs from the larger ''[[Trichosiopsis helvetica helvetica]]'' by a more slender gonostylus with a longer apical tooth. The dorsally positioned tooth is well visible in ventral view. The subspecies is genetically clearly separated from the nominotypical subspecies by its DNA barcode.

''Trichosiopsis helvetica sami'' might also be considered an independent species from ''Tr. helvetica'' as the genitalic characters facilitate a clear separation. However, as long as the geographic separation of both taxa is not better proven, the treatment as subspecific classification should be maintained.
