Generally, the thumbnail version should be used when displaying the file from Commons, in order to reduce the file size of thumbnail images. Any edits to the image should be based on this PNG version in order to prevent generational loss, and both versions should be updated. See here for more information. |

Template for labelling archival versions of files, when a compressed version exists for the purpose of providing thumbnails. Place in the other_versions= field in the {{Information}} template.</code> Label the compressed version with {{Compressed version}}.
The template automatically sets the following categories: For PNGs, Category:PNGs with JPEG versions (or if the file doesn't exist, Category:PNGs with missing JPEG versions), and, if appropriate, Category:PNG files affected by MediaWiki restrictions. For TIFs, if appropriate, Category:TIF files affected by MediaWiki restrictions.
