slit (noun; Anglo-Saxon slutan, to tear): 1. A long cut or incision.

2. (Mollusca) a. In Polyplacophora, an abrupt indentation in the insertion plate. b. In Gastropoda, a shallow incision to deep fissue in the outer margin of the aperture.
