stratum (noun; plural -ta; Latin stratum, a cover): 1. A layer of tissue or cells that compose an organ.

2. A group of organisms inhabiting a particular geographical area.

3. A layer of vegetation, usually at the same stage of development.

4. A layer of sedimentary rock or earth.
