A number of problems stand in the way of proper citation of versioned documents

Cultural

  • Researchers are not used to versioned documents
  • Many journals require web addresses to be cited with the date of access, which is often useless

Technical

  • On many platforms (e.g. Wordpress, Drupal), the version ID is not public
  • Reference managers are not prepared for handling versioned documents
  • Existing archiving tools like WebCite miss out on embedded content or linked sets of documents
  • Some standards exist for versioning software, not so clear for data
