Description

Male: Body length: 5.7–6.6mm. Wing length: 6.8–7.8mm. Flagellum brown. Frons silver-grey pollinose. Eyes meeting for about length of frons or slightly more (16–18 facets). Occiput grey pollinose in lower half and at least weakly brownish pollinose in upper third to half. Postpronotal lobe dark brown. Prescutum and scutum greyish-brown pollinose in anterior third to half and narrowly along posterior margin. Posterior hair fringe of scutellum short, longest hairs about one fifth of maximum length of scutellum (Fig. 77). Pleura and subscutellum grey pollinose. LTC about 1.0– 1.4 times LFC. Halter darkened. Trochanter dark brown. Femur with apex narrowly yellow. Hind femur not concave in ventrobasal half. Tibia dark, yellow in basal third (may be more extended dorsally). Tarsi brown, with distitarsi darkest. Pulvilli of front legs as long as or slightly shorter than distitarsi. Tergite 1 anterodorsally brown, otherwise grey pollinose. Tergites 2–5 anterodorsally with narrow band or patch of brown pollinosity (except tergite 5), laterally predominantly grey pollinose, especially in posterior half. Membranous area ovate. Surstyli elongated, in lateral view strongly bent (normally by almost 90 ° but can be less and hence similar to P. oldenbergi) and with bulbous base (Fig. 6). Phallus with three very short ejaculatory ducts. Female: Body length: 5.0– 5.8mm. Wing length: 5.8–6.4mm. Flagellum dark brown. Frons entirely grey pollinose. Postpronotal lobe dark brown. Prescutum and scutum grey pollinose in anterior third and narrowly along posterior margin, otherwise shining. Pleura and subscutellum grey pollinose. LTC about 1.0– 1.2 times LFC. Leg dark brown with apex of trochanter and femur and at least basal third of tibia yellow. Pulvilli of front leg almost 1.5 as long as distitarsi. Tergite 1 brown pollinose anterodorsally, otherwise grey pollinose. Tergites 2–6 laterally grey pollinose, dorsally shining, except narrow anterior stripe on tergite 2. Ovipositor in lateral view with long and rather straight piercer, reaching posterior margin of sternite 2, and with a weak ventral step (Fig. 45). Annotations: The species has been addressed as Pipunculus spinipes auct. nec. Meigen, 1830 until now. However, a revision of the type material of P. spinipes proved that it is conspecific with P. campestris (see above). Egger (1860) described P. elegans from both sexes based on material from the Schiner collection. The remaining syntypes of P. elegans were studied: 1 ɗ and 1 Ψ on one needle, the male dissected and designated as lectotype. An additional male was not dissected. Becker (1915: 65) erroneously synonymised P. elegans with P. spinipes. Pipunculus elegans is reinstated as a valid species (stat. rev.).
