Description
Plantas perennes, rizomatosas, con rizomas estoloníferos. Hojas con lígulas membranáceo-ciliadas; láminas lanceoladas. Inflorescencias laxas a contraídas. Espiguillas ovoides a largamente ovoides, biconvexas, glabras. Gluma inferior 1/2 a 4/5 del largo de la espiguilla, 5-7-nervia. Gluma superior y lema inferior subiguales, superando en largo al antecio superior, 7-9-nervias. Pálea inferior conspicua. Flor inferior estaminada. Antecio superior crustáceo, liso, glabro, pálea superior con papilas verrugosas en su ápice. Cariopsis (sólo vista en P. tricholaenoides) elipsoide, hilo obovado, embrión más de la mitad del largo de la cariopsis.
Biology and Ecology
Composición y distribución. Sección americana con cinco especies que frecuentemente se encuentran formando agregaciones densas en sitios húmedos, junto a cursos permanentes de agua o lagunas.
Discussion
Comentarios. Plantas C4, Kranz del subtipo anatómico PS (= XyMS+), NAD; número cromosómico básico x = 9.
