Notes
The following are some notes for discussion by Gregor Hagedorn (i.e. not part of the demo page above):
To combine open collaboration with authored and "branded" information we propose for each species to have a common base page from which one or several "branded" pages are followed. This is the base page which is authored in typical wiki style, i.e. all recognized contributors may edit it. I have dressed it up with images, but in reality it might be without images. Also, anyone may go directly to authored pages, and coming from google, this might even be likely.
An example of a branded, authored page is shown behind the link Natura Mediterraneo: Falco della regina (also shown above). It can be clearly personally authored and carry additionaly organizational logos (in addition to generally being a supporter or founder of the platform).
Collaboration
- The task to create a sufficient number of species pages is huge. It can be tackled only in collaboration. Our goal is to found and develop a shared platform for such a large scale collaboration.
- We are not offering a ready-solution, but collaborate to create one. We look forward to collaborate and jointly found a real species-id service and are in talks with various partners. We need you as founding member!
- The basis of collaboration would be the desire to create open content that can be re-used in various situations (for identification, teaching, etc.) but remains always attributed to the originals creator(s).
Technology
- We believe it will be very beneficial if our organizations can share a single platform, learning from each other and sharing the workload.
- The wiki software is a great basis for collaboration. Although it may not readily offer all desirable features, being based on the same software as Wikipedia brings both a track records of unmatched content compatibility and a very high likelyhood of long-term survival and usability. Custom software is unlikely to match this.
- The English species-id.net you currently see is not a live version, just a test bed.
- The URL could be it.wikispecies.net, it.species-id.net, wiki.naturamediterraneo.com/, or any other.
- The proprietary, authored pages could prefixed by a colon (as shown above) or they could be after a slash, like Falco della regina/(Natura Mediterraneo). The latter would have some technical advantages (some "subpage" automatism).
- If we can share a common platform, we will gain a lot of synergies. However, you are not at the mercy of the server owner. We will distribute the entire content of the server, with all projects on it, which can be used within a few days to establish the site on your own servers. However, sharing a large installation (possibly later using multiple hardware) can greatly improve productivity. A server and mediawiki setup is quick, fine-tuning backup, loads, the template and extension programming is - in our experience a few hundred times the workload.
Please do collaborate with us! Please share your concerns - we may be able to address them. Wiki are a bit different, but they do offer many structured solutions.
