Introduction

Trigonopterus is a is a genus of flightless weevils distributed in the area between Sumatra, Samoa, the Philippines, and New Caledonia. It is found in primary tropical forests, both on foliage and edaphic in the litter layer. Currently, there exist about 341 described species, but many more await discovery (Riedel, 2010). The center of its diversity appears to be New Guinea where 51 or more species can be found in a single locality (Riedel et al., 2010). Many of them are very similar to each other, but male genital characters and DNA barcoding allow a safe identification.

Diagnosis

The majority of species have a largely unclothed body, without dense vestiture. This is rather unusual among Cryptorhynchinae although exceptions occur on both sides.

For a positive diagnosis of Trigonopterus, the presence of the following character states is required:

Mesothoracic receptacle deep, posteriorly closed.

Wings absent

Scutellum completely absent externally

Elytra interlocked

Metanepisternum absent

Metathoracic spiracle located externally at the side of metaventrite
