Description

Argemone L., included more than 30 species, which are distributed amphitropically in North America, Hawaii and South America. Of the two centers of diversification, undoubtedly, the main one is the northern hemisphere, where 23 species have been described (Ownbey 1958).

The first Argemone species mentioned for Chile were A. mexicana L., described in 1753 based on Antillean material, A. rosea Hook. in 1831 and A. hunemannii Otto et Dietr. in 1833, both descriptions based on Chilean material. In Flora treatments (Gay 1845, Reiche 1896 [1]) and monographs of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century (Prain 1895, Fedde 1905, 1909), the last two species were relegated to varieties of 'A. mexicana' L.

In 1961, Ownbey revised the species of South America and Hawaii, not including material from Chilean herbaria, and determined four species, with two new ones. A. crassifolia and A. subfusiformis. The latter reaches other countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay

Later Sorarú (1976[2]), in a note on the genus Argemone from Argentina, did not accept the distinction between: A. mexicana and A.subfusiformis merging all material referring to A. subfusiformis under A. mexicana L. var. ochroleuca (Sweet)Lindl. and A. mexicana L. var. subinermis (Fedde)Sorarú: a decision based on morphological characteristics that would correlate with information on the alkaloid contents of the aerial part (Bandoni 1975).

Comments

Both A.subfusiformis ans A.hunemmani appears in Argentine
