Information Text (2009)

The Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry in Germany has a long tradition of studying Oomycota. Especially in the Institute of Mykology (later Institute for Microbiology) Dr. Heinz Kröber and later Dr. R. Marwitz have studied phytopathogenic Oomycota, esp. from the genera Pythium and Phytophthora for several decades (see for example, Kröber, 1985, Mitt. BBA, Heft 225: Erfahrungen mit Phytophthora de Bary und Pythium Pringsheim). During this time, a large collection of photographs was built up, consisting of over 2000 prints of microscopic photographs. This collection was not originally intended for publication, but created for internal reference and identification purposes.

In recent years the Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry was under heavy pressure to reduce the staff. As a consequence, with the retirement of Dr. R. Marwitz and his long-time assistent U. Poerschke nobody could be hired to continue their work.

WERRES TOOK OVER.

Since we consider the reference image collection very useful, it has been published on the web as it is. Please note especially that in many cases the prints may be scratched, speckled, or slightly unsharp. We are grateful if you help us in rating the usefulness of the images for publication, using the online-rating mechanism available.

Only limited information is available beyond the organism name. In most cases at least the strain number was available and additional information may be available in the culture collection database of the BBA. However, if the strain number is missing in the image description, we have no means to retrieve it from other data sources.

We have attempted to remove duplicate images, but occasionally we will have overlooked duplicates and are grateful for any help in finding them. Note, however, that many images show the same object, but with different exposure times or different focus. It is often difficult to decide which image is the better, and we had only time to sort out the most obvious of these cases.

Gregor Hagedorn & Prof. G. Deml.

Kröber Marwitz

The prints were created for laboratory purposes, not publication. Less diligence was therefore used in avoiding scratches, dust specks, etc.

Images were already cut to irregular sizes, after scanning further cutting was applied, partly because of margin or to reduce the background.

Part of the scratches were already on the print or even originate from the negative. One scratch running across many images, however, is due to a misfunction of the scanner that was detected only after scanning was completed.
