Subject: western pine beetle (Dendroctonus brevicomis), galleries
Description: Based on the open, branching gallery patterns and large exit holes, combined with the pattern of tree mortality (all trees in the same stage of foliage fade), we concluded that the primary bark beetle present was the western pine beetle, Dendroctonus brevicomis. This species is known to frequently kill drought-stressed pines in the Davis Mountains. We were unable to collect any adults to confirm the species. To my knowledge, however, the southern pine beetle has never been collected from the Davis Mountains, although it attacks ponderosa pine in Arizona and New Mexico.
