This is a media repository that is shared by several projects, for example [http://www.keytonature.eu/wiki/ Key to Nature], [http://species-id.net/wiki/ Species-ID] and [http://species-id.net/naturwiki/ the German Key to Nature portal]. All accounts working on these wikis will also work here. If you do not have an account, please [[Special:RequestAccount |request one]]. # Foremost and most importantly, please use '''long file names'''. There can be only a single image "Bufo bufo.jpg" on the entire repository. The OpenMedia repository is shared by several projects working on the biowikifarm (see there for a complete list). All user accounts working on the individual project portals will also work here. If you do not have an account, please request one. We welcome your collaboration and your interest in sharing your biodiversity media with others!

Media in the Wiki can be found by searching by metadata values or by performing a normal search:

To upload images or other media, please click on Upload one file or Upload multiple files on the left side.

When you upload images we have the following requests:

  1. First and most importantly, please use long file names. There can be only a single image “Bufo bufo.jpg” on the entire repository. Recommended practices are to use a creator’s name (“Bufo bufo by J. Smith.jpg”), strain number (“Museum of Erewhon No 23487121.jpg”), or date (“Bufo bufo 2008-03-10.jpg”). Please prevent naming a file like “2008M-047 01 DM 15d SNA 25x.png”, because it’s very likely to get lost in this (vast) archive without a fine given summary including categorisation. The more information a file name contains the more likely it can be found by others…;-).
  2. Image size:
    • The preferred size, and simplest for most, is the original size, even if large. All images will be automatically rescaled before used. Manual scaling may cause problems.
    • If you want to reduce image size (e. g. to reduce upload times when working on a slow internet connection), please keep a width of at least 1280 pixels. Currently this is often full screen, but soon this may be less than a quarter of the screen.
    • If you cannot share an image quality of at least 1280 pixels, you are still welcome to share smaller images!
  3. Format:
    • For line drawings or diagrams, the JPG format should be generally avoided. Use PNG or TIFF formats.
    • Do not convert a JPG image to PNG or TIFF format!
    • However, if your photo is originally available as PNG or TIFF images, you are most welcome to upload this quality.
    • Uploading large files as PNG or TIFF may be time consuming. If you have high quality PNG or TIFF photos, an alternative to uploading them natively is to convert them to jpg with a very high (e. g. 98% quality) setting.
    • The server currently limits the maximum file size to about 50 MB. You may, however, reach an earlier timeout value if upload is slow. This depends on network components and is not under our control.
  4. It is also helpful to classify and categorize images as it assists to retrieve images and group them into categories. You can get familiar with it on Help’s page “Classification in categories”.
